2006 Grand Vitara 1.6 VVTI MPG - HELP !!!

Postby wisp » Sun Mar 18, 2012 11:25 am

Hi Folks
I'm a newbie on this site so hope someone car help with some information on very poor MPG from my wife's 2006 Grand Vitata 1.6 VVTI.

I've been driving it for a few weeks now and have noticed that it returns alarmingly poor MPG for a small 1.6L engine. Around town it gives around 21 mpg, and on a motorway run ( with the speeds around 56 - 60 mph, it only gives 25/26mpg ).

I've asked my wife when the car became this thirsty, but as she normally fills up with £30 - £40 at a time and doesn't check the distance from the tank of fuel, she didn't realise it was so poor.

The car only has 23,000 miles on the clock, and has been well looked after, but I'm now very concerned that something may be wrong to give such low MPG. It's never been as low as this till recently so I'd appreciate if anyone can chime in with any reasons ?

Thanks :(

Should be better than that.

Does she fully release the handbrake? Are the shoes clear of the drums with the brake off?

Try a drive with minimum use of brakes and check whether the front disks are hot - you may have a stuck caliper.

I think there may be a tendency to regard fuel consumption as being more or less a function of engine size and little else.

The GV is not a car, it is a light truck with a strengthened off-road chassis and 4WD, which carry a considerable weight penalty. It takes extra energy to accelerate that extra weight, and that comes from the fuel.

My 2.5 litre 1998 GV gives me 24.5 mpg, but then I have extra power which I can use to accelerate faster than a 1.6, so using more fuel. 26 for the 2006 1.6 GV does not seem too bad in comparison, but 21 around town seems poor. I wonder if the 1.6 is somewhat underpowered for its weight, forcing the engine to work well outside it's most economical parameters. Perhaps the 2 litre would be better?

yeah i have one of these cars the 3 door vvt 1.6 57 plate.
the best i can get out of it in town is 27 mpg

to be honest its a small engine in a heavy car but with that said 27 mpg for such a big heavy 4x4 in town is not bad going.

my mates bmw x5 does 9 to 10 mpg in town.
