jimny's lack of power

Postby bigAL » Sun Mar 21, 2010 5:47 pm

I bought the Mrs a 2003 O2 jimny, she loves it, but it dies as soon as it looks at a hill, you end up in 1st or 2nd doing 20mph..EMBARASSING... No lights on the dash, no fault codes, and it has the G13BB engine. Any help or ideas greatly appreciated.

Hi bigAL

I've a 51 plate softop with the G13BB engine and it goes like a rocket.

Check the air filter isn't clogged and that the throttle butterfly is opening fully. Stretched cable or too much carpet under pedal. BTW I've heard 2 stories recently of throttle pedals getting stuck under carpet (neither on a Jimny, but you can't be too careful!) with resulting lack of the ability to slow down, so if there's too much carpet make sure it can't catch.

A warning to everybody.

What the MPG like? If it is very low then perhaps the Lambda sensor is sick

Maybe the Catalytic converter is getting blocked.

Is it associated with a mis-fire (Rev counter dancing around) - camshaft sensor breaking down.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I have replaced the air filter, I can get the full rev range so I don't think its the carpet, I put a new lambda sensor in for the mot 3 weeks ago..........what next???

You can get the full rev range when stationary with the throttle something like 20% open. You need to physically check it opens to 100%

After taking the cat off today, and finding some of the "biscuit" inside broken, I knocked the rest of the insides out and refitted the empty cat.

Problem solved
it may not pass an mot like this, but as its only just been done it gives me time to find a replacement.

Thanks to Darren at K.A.P who pointed me in the right direction.
and everyone else who offered advice and ideas
