Postby ladypenelope » Mon Apr 17, 2017 5:16 pm

Has anybody got an old but serviceable 165 65 14 tyre they could part with?
Got one now.

On the subject of tyres, I still have the originals (the size you mention, I think) on the front of my up! I've been told that once they (or any tyre) get to 6 years old they should be changed regardless of their mileage. I queried that advice and was told that an unused, new tyre at 6 years of age should NOT be used except as a spare for an emergency.
Is this correct? or is it another like the 'Startrite' shoes myth that shoes should never be passed from one child to another as it was bad for their feet - which was later debunked.
2004 WagonR+Auto was for my wife. She liked the auto (NO stop/start) so passed it on having served its purpose. Then our up! got written off (hit-and-run). So have replaced with a 10k miles 2-yr old auto POLO. Lovely, but oh dear, NOT the stop/start!

Even modern artificial rubber has a life-span before it perishes. The signs are usually cracks in the sidewall, but I suppose if the tyre were unused they would not appear. Whether 6 years is the right interval I couldn't say, but I have used a weightsaver spare which was older than that, and cracks did not appear.

If they have any cracks, however small, in the sidewalls, they should be scrapped. If not, just keep an eye on them.
